Liturgical Ministries
Liturgical ministries offer many opportunities for people with a variety of gifts to contribute to the celebration of Mass and other worship services in special, specific ways. You are invited to find out more about these ministries and prayerfully consider if one would be a good fit for you. More than 70 people give of their time and talent for Masses each weekend here at St. Leonard!

Altar Servers
Parish youth in Grade 4 and up are invited to join this ministry. Altar Servers help the priest and the deacon during Mass, as well as completing other duties before Mass begins. Servers enhance the quality of celebration for the whole gathered assembly by taking part in processions and they participate not only in their distinctive ministerial functions but also together with the worshiping Assembly by singing, listening, responding and through their posture and gestures.
Each St. Leonard server is scheduled one weekend Mass about once a month, and after being trained, new servers are paired with more experienced servers for their first Masses in this important role.
Eucharistic Ministers
As Catholics, we believe that Christ is really present in the consecrated bread and wine. Our parishioners who serve as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion at Mass distribute the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ to people at Mass or other worship services. Some bring consecrated hosts to nursing homes residents or home-bound people. Parishioners who have been confirmed may become Eucharistic Ministers. No dates are assigned for this ministry, as ministers simply volunteer at the Mass they are attending. The only exception to this are sign-ups requested for special holy days such as Christmas.
Lectors
Lectors proclaim readings and general intercessions during worship services. The lector proclaims - that is, helps the scriptures come alive to touch the hearts and minds of the congregation. In addition, lectors may carry the Book of Gospels in the entrance procession and proclaims the general intercessions.
Lectors are assigned for all Sunday liturgies, holy days of obligation, and other special services. Lectors are assigned approximately once every six weeks. Parish members who have reached the age for receiving the sacrament of Confirmation are eligible to lector.
Ushers
Our ushers help greet guests and parishioners attending Mass, in addition to performing other duties during Mass. Their friendly smiles and assistance in answering questions or finding seating for someone are very important and often leave a lasting impression. At St. Leonard Parish, several teams of ushers of all ages help at Masses and it's ok if you want to help out even just once per month. Families are welcome to usher together!
Sacristans
Sacristan is the perfect liturgical role for people who like to work behind the scenes. These men and women monitor and set up the bread (hosts), the wine, the cloths, the chalices, the bread plates, the candles, the flowers, the priest's vestments and other sacred objects used in worship. Tasks include set-up, cleaning and laundry. We could not celebrate Mass without the help of these special people.
Worship Committee
At St. Leonard Parish, there are three groups that work with liturgy: the Worship Committee, the Liturgical Environment Committee and staff members who are the liturgy planners.
The Worship Committee is a crucial standing committee of the Pastoral Council that meets nearly every month. It nourishes and gives direction to the liturgical aspect of parish life. The Worship Committee helps ensure that parishioners receive opportunities to deepen their faith through a variety of prayer experiences and liturgical celebrations.
The work of this committee:
- Recruit and provide formation for the various liturgical ministries
- Coordinates the efforts of all liturgical ministers.
- Sees to it that multiple forms of prayer and worship are provided in the parish.
- Communicates among the various ministries for specific seasons and celebrations
- Establishes worship policies, procedures and guidelines (For example: determine formation required for a person to serve in a liturgical ministry).
- Determines budget priorities in the area of the committee’s responsibility and makes appropriated recommendations to the budget process through the Finance Committee.
- Evaluates the appropriateness and effectiveness of the parish’s worship (at least on a annual basis).
Environment Committee
The Environment Committee helps decorate our worship space for the liturgical seasons.
Music Ministry
Music is a form of prayer that has been used since the earliest days of the Church to help us express our faith and worship the God that deserves our praise. St. Leonard music ministers support the congregation by encouraging full, active and conscious participation in the Liturgy through sung prayer. Whether you are an instrumentalist or singer, we are always looking for new members!
To get involved in music ministry see the contact form at the bottom of the page or contact Bryan Staedler, Director of Music and Liturgy, in the Parish Office: 262-679-1773.

Cantors
